A Perfect Autumn Day Out: Our Visit to Lower Drayton Farm's Pumpkin Patch

There’s something special about this time of year, and for us, a trip to a pumpkin patch is a family tradition we always look forward to. This weekend, we headed over to the brilliant Lower Drayton Farm in Penkridge to check out their PYO Pumpkin event, and it was a day packed with fun.

From the moment we arrived, the friendly atmosphere was fantastic. We were greeted at the PYO Pumpkin entrance by amazing members of staff (some in costume!) who explained how the day worked. My son immediately spotted the bucking bronco and, after a quick go on the pedal karts outside, he was straight on it, having the time of his life. It was great to see fun activities like this and the bouncy castle included in the entry.

While waiting for the next tractor ride to the pumpkins, we saw the PYO Veg ride returning and decided to hop on that instead. This was a real highlight. The tractor took us through the fields where we got to pick our own carrots, potatoes, beetroot, parsnips, and even sweetcorn straight from the stalk! The farmers on hand were brilliant, explaining how to tell when the sweetcorn was ready to pick – a great learning moment for us all.

After returning with our bag of fresh veg, we caught the next tractor to the main event: the pumpkin patch. The field was huge, dotted with giant dinosaurs and, more importantly, some absolutely massive pumpkins – some were the size of a wheelbarrow! As we were getting the bus home, we had to be sensible with our choices, but there were pumpkins of every shape and size to choose from.

We ran out of time to carve them on-site, but the indoor carving barn is a great option to leave the mess behind. We really couldn't fault the day at all. It was a fantastic local day out that the whole family enjoyed. I would highly recommend it to anyone looking to get into the autumn spirit.
