Baswich Lane closure plans change following diversion route issues

Updated: 2 days ago

Plans for the upcoming roadworks on Baswich Lane in Stafford have changed, following new information from Network Rail.

Earlier notices had advised residents and drivers that Baswich Lane would be fully closed for an extended period, to allow repair work to the bridge carrying the road over the railway. That closure was expected to run continuously while the work was completed.

However, Network Rail has now confirmed that the original plan has been amended, after issues were identified with the diversion route.

What was originally planned

The initial information shared with residents stated that:

  • Baswich Lane would be fully closed for the duration of the works

  • A signed diversion would be in place

  • Work would take place over just over two weeks, including some overnight shifts

Signage in the area also suggested daytime-only closures, which caused some confusion locally.

What has changed

Network Rail has now advised that Baswich Lane will not close tomorrow as previously expected.

Instead:

  • A full road closure will take place on Saturday night

  • From Sunday morning, traffic will be managed using one-way temporary traffic lights

The revised plan is due to a bridge on the diversion route having a maximum weight or capacity limit, meaning a full diversion is not suitable for all traffic for the entire period. The work itself is still expected to take two weeks and two days to complete.

Confirmation still awaited

While this update has come directly from Network Rail, confirmation is still awaited from the county council road network team to formally align all traffic management systems and public notices.

Drivers are advised to remain cautious and expect further updates, particularly around signage and traffic light arrangements once the works begin.

What residents should expect

  • No full closure from Thursday 8th January

  • A full overnight closure on Saturday

  • Temporary one-way traffic lights from Sunday morning

  • Ongoing disruption for just over two weeks

We’ll continue to share updates as soon as final confirmation is received.

Thanks again to Baswich Ward Matters for helping keep residents informed as details continue to evolve.
