Knit & Natter group launches “1000 Poppies for Remembrance” project in Sandon

A community knitting project bringing people together through remembrance and creativity is getting underway in Sandon as part of a wider local celebration marking a significant milestone.

The Knit & Natter group has launched “1000 Poppies for Remembrance”, a project inviting local people to help create hand-knitted poppies throughout 2026.

The initiative forms part of All Saints Sandon’s 1000 Years | 1000 Voices celebrations, recognising a thousand years of history, stories, and community connection in the village.

Monthly sessions at The Greyhound Inn

The Knit & Natter group will meet at The Greyhound Inn, Burston, starting on 29 January, from 1.30pm until 3pm. Sessions will then continue on the fourth Thursday of each month.

Organisers say the sessions are open, welcoming, and designed to be as much about conversation and connection as they are about knitting. Those attending can contribute to the poppy project or simply enjoy being part of a relaxed community group.

A shared act of remembrance

The aim of the project is to create 1,000 knitted poppies over the course of the year, forming a collective act of remembrance while also celebrating the voices and hands behind each piece.

An example poppy pattern is available via the All Saints Sandon website, with further details about this and other anniversary events expected to be shared over the coming months.

Community support behind the project

Organisers have also thanked The Greyhound Inn for providing free use of a room for the sessions, and The Artisan Boutique in Stone for the generous donation of wool to help get the project started.

Anyone wanting more information is encouraged to get in touch with the organisers directly.
