Stafford's Former TK Maxx to Become New Arts and Community Hub

A new arts and community hub is set to open in Stafford's former TK Maxx building after the "Heart of Stafford by Gatehouse Theatre" was awarded free use of the empty store. The project, named HEART (Hub of Entertainment, Art, Recreation and Theatre), will transform the 19,000 sq ft unit at Friary Retail Park into a thriving centre for local creatives.

The opportunity was announced in September when Hypha Studios offered the huge space for free to a local creative or community group. The call-out was for groups needing space for workshops, rehearsals, or exhibitions, with the condition that they run public events in return.

The Gatehouse Theatre, described as the most popular arts venue in central Staffordshire, will now lead the transformation. Technical staff are set to install seating, temporary staging, and PA equipment on the ground floor of the former fashion store.

The project will also be a base for several partner groups, including:

  • Dappa Dance: A not-for-profit company run by industry professionals providing performing arts training.

  • The Gatehouse Youth Theatre: A company for young people aged 9 to 18 who work with professional staff to create high-quality theatre.

The building at Unit 2, Friary Retail Park, has been empty since April, when TK Maxx closed the store before reopening at Queens Retail Park in May.
