Bookings open for PSA prostate cancer blood tests in Stafford this April

Men aged 40 and over are being invited to book a PSA prostate cancer blood test at a screening event in Stafford later this month.

The event is being organised by Stafford Lions Club (CIO) and is due to take place on Sunday 26 April 2026 at Stafford Rangers Social Club, Astonfields Road, Stafford, ST16 3UF.

The screening session is being held in the afternoon and is strictly by appointment only, with no walk ins accepted. Appointments are available between 2pm and 6pm

What the test is

The PSA test is a quick and simple blood test used to help detect signs linked to prostate cancer. Organisers have stressed that it is not a physical examination.

The tests will be carried out by qualified phlebotomists supplied by The Graham Fulford Charity Trust, which the poster says is a King’s Award for Voluntary Service winner.

High demand expected after last event

The last Stafford screening event was held on 27 April 2025 and all 300 appointments were booked.

However, over 40 people did not turn up on the day, which meant fewer tests were carried out than planned. That is a big missed chance at an event where demand is clearly strong.

Results later shared from that screening showed that:

  • 248 men aged 40+ were tested

  • 20 red letters were issued

  • 23 amber letters were issued

  • 205 men got the all clear

That means around 82% of those tested received an all clear result.

The figures also show why events like this matter. While most men tested were cleared, a significant number were flagged for further follow up.

More spaces are expected to be released

At the moment, the booking system may show 200 appointments, but more spaces are expected to be released once that number is reached.

So even if early places go quickly, it does not necessarily mean that is the final total.

Made possible by local fundraising

The testing day is only possible thanks to the fundraising work of Stafford Lions Club (CIO).

The group describes itself as local men and women who give some of their spare time to helping vulnerable people, groups and individuals in Stafford and surrounding villages.

That community fundraising helps cover the cost of putting events like this on. The poster says each PSA test costs Stafford Lions £25, so donations are welcomed.
